How It All Started.......
At Makin' Waves KC, our journey into the world of aquatics began unexpectedly. After the loss of our family dog, our children requested a fish. That small request led us to dive in with a 90-gallon freshwater tank and a 60-gallon axolotl setup. In true "go big or go home" fashion, we embraced the challenge, but soon realized freshwater fish weren’t the right fit for us.
As Jody delved deeper into researching saltwater aquariums, he proposed a bold idea—let’s sell the freshwater tanks and go all-in on saltwater. It took a little time for me to warm up to the idea, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve made. We started small with a couple of pre-owned tanks, piecing together equipment and adding features like mat rollers for convenience.
As we grew more passionate about the hobby, we discovered the incredible world of 3D printing. Many aquarium products could be 3D printed, so we added a few printers to our toolkit to design custom pieces ourselves. Along the way, we connected with countless people while searching for tanks, equipment, and solutions for our water change setup. With every connection, we ended up with extra tanks and gear, and soon found ourselves selling the surplus.
This natural progression of buying, selling, and trading tanks, fish, and coral led us to officially establish Makin' Waves KC. We’re here to share our passion and expertise with fellow enthusiasts, whether you’re just starting or looking to elevate your saltwater setup.
